LGDC Annual Picnic and Tour

Lincoln Group Tour Director Craig Howell will be leading our annual Picnic & Tour on Saturday June 1, 2019, at Manassas National Battlefield. Craig is offering us tours of both the First Battle (July 21, 1861) and the Second Battle (August 28-30, 1862), with special focus on the often-fraught relationships between President Lincoln and his generals.

We will rendezvous at 10 am at the Henry Hill Visitors Center on Sudley Road/Route 234, starting with a walking tour of the Visitor Center and the Henry House, the heart of the First Battle. This ground is mostly open (bring sunscreen, bug spray and protective headgear) and mostly level, though it may be muddy. Then we will drive to the battlefield's picnic grounds for lunch; restrooms and covered pavilions are available here.

After lunch we'll form a convoy for a driving tour of the high points of the Second Battle. There will be some walking involved in a few spots (e.g., at the Brawner Farm) but shade will be much more abundant than during the morning tour. This tour should end by 3 pm.

Craig will be organizing a carpool from a Metro station along I-66 (either Vienna/Fairfax or East Falls Church) for those, like himself, who will need rides to Manassas. Carpool drivers will also be needed for the relatively short ride, so please consider volunteering to drive.

There is no charge, and admission to the battlefield is now free. Anyone planning to attend this function should RSVP to Craig, either by phone (202--462-0535) or email (craighowell1@verizon.net). Please let him know whether you need a ride, whether you can offer rides as a driver, or whether you will meet us at the Henry Hill Visitor Center.
